Why are some people more predisposed to various addictions than other people? For those who suffer with addictions, they often ask themselves this question every single day. Perhaps you can relate, because you’ve asked the same question.
There are many reasons why one person is more vulnerable to falling prey to addiction than another person. However, regardless of the reason behind the addiction, the right kind of addiction therapy is very beneficial because it addresses those underlying reasons.
Addiction Treatment
Addictions come in many varieties. Whether you suffer from an addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex or gambling, addiction counselling can help you get started on the path to recovery. It isn’t easy to come to terms with the fact that you need to get addiction therapy, especially when you find yourself constantly questioning why this had to happen to you. Even so, when you work with an addiction therapist, he or she can help you uncover the reason you’re addicted.
While there is help for addicts who are seriously struggling with their addictions, it’s important to understand that you have to be ready to take the journey. Abstinence from the substance you’re using or from the behavior is crucial because it’s only then that you will be able to start the healing process.
Do Addictions Take Hold Due to Trauma?
There are many different lifetime events that can cause a person to abuse drugs or alcohol, or to engage in dangerous sexual behaviors. Once the abuse continues to occur, that is when the addiction takes root. Perhaps you have gone through a serious, life-changing or traumatic event in your life. Whether that event was the loss of a parent, the loss of a marriage or significant romantic relationship, or because you faced another challenge in your life, using substances or turning to sex or gambling as a way to find relief eventually resulted in addiction. Let’s illustrate how this works by using alcohol as an example.
Perhaps your wife of twenty years decided she wanted a divorce. You were heartbroken, and you turned to alcohol as a way to “drown your sorrows.” Your brain recognized that alcohol helped you cope and even feel better for a few minutes or even longer. It doesn’t take much time before an addiction is formed because you have begun to associate those positive feelings with drinking. The initial problem is never truly dealt with properly.
Regardless of the reasons behind your addiction, the fact is that it is there and most people require some type of professional help to break free from that. As an addiction and trauma therapist, I will work with you on those issues you’re facing; even the ones you might not know are there. Together, we can work on getting you on the path to recovery.
