Sexual relationships are a part of every adult’s life. Whether you are single, married or in any type of relationship, sexual activities and thoughts are normal and healthy parts of our psyche. Nevertheless, there is a line between healthy sexual behaviours and unhealthy sexual behaviours.

Sexual Addiction is a very real phenomenon. It can be as debilitating and destructive as a severe addiction to drugs or alcohol.

If you have concerns about your sexual behaviours, you may wish to utilize the following self-assessment.

Developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes, PATHOS is a brief questionnaire which can help you determine whether or not you may be struggling with a sexual addiction.

1. Do you often find yourself preoccupied with sexual thoughts? (Preoccupied)

2. Do you hide some of your sexual behavior from others? (Ashamed)

3. Have you ever sought help for sexual behavior you did not like? (Treatment)

4. Has anyone been hurt emotionally because of your sexual behavior? (Hurt Others)

5. Do you feel controlled by your sexual desire? (Out of Control)

6. When you have sex, do you feel depressed afterwards? (Sad)

It is important to remember that this brief questionnaire does not necessarily mean you are an addict. However, if you answered yes to one or more questions, you may want to further examine your behaviors, reflect upon your answers and consider speaking with a professional.
