Alcoholism Recovery

When you have an alcohol addiction, alcoholism recovery is a lifelong journey. It’s not something that can be attained after a certain period of time because your addictive mind will always fall prey to alcohol if given the opportunity. When you first engaged in rehab for alcoholism, you may have thought that it wouldn’t do you much good. Maybe you tried to quit drinking the past on your own, but you weren’t able to be successful with those attempts. You were discouraged, but you held out hope that maybe rehab for alcoholism would help.

The key to maintaining your sobriety during difficult times is remembering the tools and concepts you learned during your alcohol treatment.

Protecting Your Sobriety During Alcoholism Recovery

There are several things you can do to protect your sobriety. However, please remember that you need to be mindful of your actions. You can use these tips if you need motivation to stay sober.

  • Remove all temptation to drink: It might sound like a simple concept, but it’s not always as easy as it seems. You can embrace the idea of making sure there’s no alcohol in your house, but it’s a different story when you need to stop spending time with people who drink too. They might be social drinkers, or they might be alcoholics too. Either way, it’s essential for you to remove all temptations from your life if you’re going to stay sober.
  • Keep going to support groups: We’re all human, and it’s so easy for us to forget how far we’ve come when we’re in recovery from alcohol addiction. Going to support groups allows you to offer support to those who need it, and it also allows you to remember all that you’ve overcome in your recovery journey.
  • Write down your reasons for sobriety: Because addiction is such a powerful force, it’s so easy to make concessions for a drink now and then. You might find yourself saying things like, “Oh, it’s a special occasion” or “Just one drink won’t hurt anything.” Write down your reasons for getting sober to keep them fresh in your mind, and keep that list handy so you can refer to it often.
  • Reward yourself for not drinking: We live in a rewards-driven society, and it’s perfectly fine for you to reward yourself for staying sober. You might consider setting aside the money you would have spent on alcohol so you can save for something special you’ve been wanting. Whether it’s a new tablet or a vacation, rewards really do work.

Your sobriety really is an amazing accomplishment, and if you set your sights on staying sober, you will.
