Self-leadership is something that people who have suffered through traumatic events often lack. They feel out of control of the way they feel. They often suffer from:
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Undeniable and unavoidable fear
- The fear of rejection
- Feelings of self-loathing
- Flashbacks and nightmares
- Continuous brain fog
These experiences are very real for someone who has experienced a trauma. Living in this state becomes tiring, and yet, it’s something that too many people accept as their reality for the remainder of their lives.
The fact is that you’re not able to effectively lead yourself when you’re suffering because of a trauma. The event itself has robbed you of that ability. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to remain this way.
The Truth in Treating Trauma
The event that has happened to you was horrific. It’s something that seems destined to shape your life in the years to come. The truth in treating trauma is that whatever you’ve lived through cannot be undone. Maybe you’ve suffered because of abuse or rape. Perhaps you’re a Veteran and you’ve been traumatized in war. Whatever the case may be, these events occurred, and there’s nothing that can be done to change them. No amount of treatment is ever going to make them go away.
However, there is a way for you to heal from it, although it might seem impossible right now. The challenge is for you to reclaim your ability to lead yourself once again. In his book, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk refers to this as, “Reestablishing ownership of your body and your mind.”
Imagine a Life of Freedom
For just a moment, think about what it will feel like to be free of those thoughts and feelings. Imagine experiencing the sounds, images and experiences that are currently acting as triggers. However, instead of reacting by having a flashback, you’re able to remain calm and poised.
Let’s take this a step further. Imagine that you’re finally able to focus on the task at hand instead of living your life as though you were in a fog. What if you no longer dwelled in the past, but you were able to live in the moment and be there fully? With the right trauma therapy, it’s possible.
Of course, none of this can be achieved all at once. It takes time to go through the steps to heal from trauma. However, if this is something you’re willing to invest in, you will reap the rewards of it. You may find that healing is much closer than you think it is.
